BOOKS

Becoming Nursey (First Edition):

From Code Blues to Code Browns, How to Care for Your Patients and Yourself

This book is my one-stop reference guide to help YOU become a safe and efficient nurse as fast as possible. It is comprised of my progression from nursing school to critical care with some tips, tricks, and shenanigans along the way.

I go over time management skills for both floor nursing and critical care. I talk about calling physicians, basic assessment skills, code blues for newbies, delegation, my nursing school ten commandments, and what I think it means to be a good nurse.  I also talked about the time I got poop on my face. Yes. Poop on my face.

Praise for Becoming Nursey:

“This is a must read for new nursing graduates, students, and anyone who dreams of entering this sacred profession.  The practical information contained in this book is priceless.  Everything from surviving nursing school, to passing board exams, to organizing your time as a floor nurse is covered.  The text is a clear, organized, and easy to follow set of instructions for tackling day to day challenges.  How I wish I had this type of manual for medical school and residency!

What I think is almost more valuable, however, to not only nurses but also doctors and the community as a whole, is the emotional candor of the book.  Often humorous, sometimes heart-breaking, Kati paints in broad brush strokes the humanity of the profession in general.

We laugh at the descriptions of the physical pitfalls when she describes tackling the not so delicate parts of her job, and we cry when she tells of the emotional hazards we all face while caring for our fellow human beings.

Buy it.”

“I wish this book was available to give all new nurses who crossed my path. It will make them feels as though they are not alone, prepare them for what’s to come, and allow them to make informed choices as they move from school to becoming nursey.”

Executive Board Relations Specalist, American Association of Critical Care Nurses

“All I can say is where was ‘Becoming Nursey’ when I was a new grad and thank goodness it is here for todays novice nurses. Kleber has packed so much wisdom into just 149 pages that I am in awe. This book is not only a must read for new nurses, but also for nursing students, nurse educators, and nurse leaders. There are not enough hours in the nursing education process to learn all there is to know about the care of patients. Kleber not only provides core tips on how to care for patients. She also offers suggestions on how to be a professional nurse and reminders that self-care is essential to be a great nurse.”

“What Kati Kleber has done for nurses with her masterful book “Becoming Nursey” she now does for patients – and people who might become patients – with “Admit One.” I have worked in and for hospitals for more than 40 years and this is the best overview I have seen informing a patient of what he or she can expect upon being admitted to a hospital. This is also a great resource for people who work in a hospital to learn more about how the rest of the organization works.”

The Smart Nurse’s Guide to Your Dream Job

What’s Next? The Smart Nurse’s Guide to Your Dream Job will enable you to flip on the light switch for nursing professional development and turn that dark and unknown space into a brightly lit room—where you can pick and choose what you desire in order to further yourself both professionally and personally.

Many hospitals provide information about how to be a successful charge nurse, nurse mentor, and nurse preceptor, but they are typically higher-level-thinking tips and not practical, real advice.

What’s Next? The Smart Nurse’s Guide to Your Dream Job addresses these personal and professional options and goes into detail about some of the more practical advice for successfully evolving into a formal or informal nurse on your unit—from learning how to be an effective charge nurse to learning how to precept and mentor new nurses, and much more.

What’s Next? The Smart Nurse’s Guide to Your Dream Job also outlines and describes the importance of continuing education, professional organizations and certifications, shared governance, and how to handle negative people when you are trying to better yourself.

While most books about professional development are written for management-level nurses or people in non-clinical positions, What’s Next? The Smart Nurse’s Guide to Your Dream Job is specifically directed toward professional development from the practical point of view of a bedside nurse
